Pentagon Introduces New Evaluation for Senior Military Promotions
In a video posted on X, Hegseth announced that the Defense Department will launch the “Joint Warfighter Evaluation” this year for eligible colonels and Navy captains.
The battlefield-focused assessment will evaluate candidates for one-star positions based on “their ability to fight, adapt, and win,” he said.
“While the backbone of our military is our NCOs (noncommissioned officers) and our petty officers, victory depends on the commanders who lead them,” Hegseth said.
He also said “America needs warfighters who can master a chaotic battle space,” arguing that senior commanders should be chosen based on “proven competence, not paper credential.”
According to reports citing internal documents, the assessment will differ across the military branches, with each service developing its own format.
The Army plans to combine a written examination with a digital wargame, while the Air Force and Space Force will conduct a two-hour online analytical test followed by a one-hour simulation. Navy officers will take a three-hour written assessment and participate in a two-to-three-hour wargame at the Naval War College.
The Marine Corps is preparing an eight-hour remote evaluation through an AI-enabled platform that will combine written assessments with situational judgment tests.
