US Treasury Announces Global Shutdown of Iranian Airline Operations
"On September 23rd, all the Iranian airlines will be shut down around the world," Bessent told US television network CNBC, describing measures designed to restrict international support for Iran’s aviation industry.
Under the planned restrictions, international airports and other facilities that continue servicing Iranian aircraft could lose access to the US banking system, Bessent said. Foreign companies could also face consequences if they refuel Iranian planes, allow them to land or sell tickets for their flights, potentially putting their access to dollar-clearing services at risk.
Iranian authorities had not immediately issued a public statement concerning the announced restrictions.
Bessent also cautioned foreign companies and financial intermediaries against helping Tehran bypass the measures. He said Washington had identified entities involved in facilitating financial transactions connected to Iran.
"We've seen enablers throughout the world. We know who they are. They know who they are, and we are putting a stop to it," he said.
Bessent was also asked about whether China could play a role in enforcing the measures. He confirmed that the issue had been discussed during diplomatic meetings and said Washington prefers conducting discreet negotiations with other governments rather than making public announcements.
He described these contacts as "quiet, behind-the-scenes discussions" with several countries, while noting that Chinese financial authorities, including People's Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng, remain “very engaged in the process.”
