Trump, Mamdani Meet at Gracie Mansion, Talk Housing Push
The meeting marked the third face-to-face encounter between the two leaders and the first to take place on New York soil. Their earlier meetings were held at the White House, including a February session that touched in part on housing development.
Mamdani said afterward that the discussion centered on lowering the cost of living for New Yorkers and expanding housing construction, with a major focus on the proposed redevelopment of Sunnyside Yards in Queens — a sprawling rail-yard project Mamdani said could generate roughly 12,000 homes and 30,000 jobs.
Mamdani said City Hall and the White House agreed to establish a new level of coordination between their respective housing and operations teams to move the project forward.
Trump noted that Sunnyside Yards has been discussed for decades and would likely require federal approvals and funding to advance. He added that a significant share of any development should be set aside for low- and moderate-income housing.
The meeting unfolded at a politically charged moment, with Trump in New York for a packed schedule of diplomatic engagements tied to the UN General Assembly. He is set to address the Assembly on Tuesday and is expected to hold meetings with multiple foreign leaders during his stay.
At a news conference following the sit-down, Trump said he hoped Mamdani would go on to become a "great mayor," despite the stark political differences separating the two men.
Mamdani, for his part, said he'd leave it to New Yorkers to judge his performance in office.
Trump also fielded questions about restrictions on several news organizations' access to the White House, saying he believes those outlets have an obligation to report fairly. Mamdani said he supports having members of the press present at Gracie Mansion regardless of their opinions or criticism of him.
