Fidan Urges US to Press Israel Over Regional Stability
During a panel in New York titled “Türkiye-US Relations on the Eve of the Centennial,” Fidan said Ankara and Washington have a shared interest in seeing sovereign and stable countries emerge in the region that can ensure security and improve living conditions, with Syria and Iraq among the key examples.
Fidan also stressed the importance of allowing countries in the region to take a larger role in managing their own security. He said: “Local solutions have a better chance to live.”
He explained that regional states should assume greater responsibility for maintaining security and stability within their own areas, arguing that stronger regional ownership should be supported and developed. Fidan pointed to the Mecca alliance involving Türkiye, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia as an example of such cooperation.
According to Fidan, three major issues currently pose significant challenges to regional stability: the war involving Iran, the possibility that the conflict in Yemen could expand into neighboring countries, and what he described as Israel’s destabilizing policies throughout the region.
