Lula Blasts Trump's "Law of the Strongest" World View
"President Trump was elected to be the US president. He has the right to govern. But he doesn't have the right to govern other countries," Lula told a CNN anchor in an interview.
"He doesn't have the right to impose his will," he continued. "I like to be respected and show respect."
The Brazilian leader took aim at what he cast as Trump's go-it-alone posture on global affairs, urging nations to lean harder into multilateral cooperation to resolve international disputes. "The best way to keep the world in harmony is to strengthen multilateralism," he said, according to CNN Brasil.
Lula argued that Trump's governing philosophy rests on a might-makes-right premise — and said he flatly rejects it. "He has a way of governing: 'I am the strongest, I am the richest, I can do everything and the others have to obey.' It is the law of the strongest. I do not agree with that," he said.
Monday's remarks extend a running pattern of criticism Lula has leveled at Trump's approach to foreign affairs, as friction between Brasília and Washington builds over trade disputes and mounting US pressure on Brazil. The Brazilian president has separately urged the US to stay out of Brazil's 2026 presidential race, insisting the country's political future is for Brazilians alone to decide.
Lula touched down in New York on Sunday ahead of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, where he is set to deliver the body's traditional opening address Tuesday.
The interview lands amid an unresolved standoff between Brazil and the US over trade measures and Washington's criticism of Brazilian domestic affairs. Lula said Brazil remains open to dialogue and negotiation with the US — but won't bow to outside impositions.
