Israel Heightens Naval Readiness Over Houthi Advances in Yemen
Israeli security officials are closely following developments after the Houthis strengthened their presence along Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and expanded their influence around the important maritime passage.
Israeli assessments indicated that the withdrawal of Yemeni government forces from Perim, also known as Mayyun Island, near the entrance to the strait has given the Houthis greater potential to affect maritime traffic through the area.
The development has heightened Israeli concerns over possible threats to commercial vessels using Bab el-Mandeb, which measures roughly 18 kilometers (11 miles) across at its narrowest points.
According to Israeli assessments, the Houthis could potentially deploy missiles and boats loaded with explosives against ships passing through the strategic waterway.
The developments have also triggered criticism within Israel’s security establishment, with officials raising concerns over what they described as an “erosion of deterrence” and questioning the inability of regional parties to prevent the Houthis from expanding their position.
