Iran to Set Strait of Hormuz Mechanism, Denies Fees on Indian Tankers
Speaking in New Delhi, Ambassador Mohammad Fathali highlighted the steady relationship between India and Iran, noting that ties remain strong even amid ongoing challenges.
“We believe that the Strait of Hormuz is a territorial water and we... in the near future... (will) provide (a) mechanism for all the countries,” Fathali said, adding “Iran believed that and committed to international law and freedom of navigation.”
He also underlined that Indian oil tankers navigating the strategic passage have not incurred any tolls from Iran.
“You can ask ... the Indian government if we have charged anything up to now,” he said.
As indicated by recent data cited in reports, approximately two million barrels of Iranian crude have been delivered to India since March 20 under a US sanctions exemption. India had previously halted such imports in 2019.
Commenting on recent discussions between the United States and Iran held in Pakistan, Fathali criticized Washington’s stance, describing it as involving “unlawful demands."
