Provided by AGPThe back-to-back alerts involved a pair of US Air Force PC-12 turboprop planes — aircraft commonly associated with surveillance and reconnaissance operations. According to Kurier newspaper, the aircraft triggered air-policing responses on both Sunday and Monday after crossing into Austrian territory without the mandatory permits required for military transit flights.
Defense Ministry spokesperson Michael Bauer confirmed that two Eurofighters were scrambled Monday at 12:31 PM local time (1031 GMT) to intercept and identify the intruding planes. Following the interception, the US military aircraft reversed course and headed back toward Munich.
Bauer further disclosed that the same planes had been detected over Upper Austria on Sunday, prompting the initial emergency response. He indicated that both incidents would be addressed through diplomatic channels.
The episodes come amid a broader tightening of Austrian airspace monitoring in recent months. Last month, Vienna barred US military aircraft operating in connection with the war against Iran from transiting its airspace, invoking the country's longstanding neutrality laws.
Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler took to social media to voice strong opposition, writing that Austrians wanted "nothing to do with (US President Donald) Trump's politics of chaos and his war," and adding, "Neutrality is a precious asset in our country. No to war."
