Provided by AGPAccording to reports citing informed sources, US officials are exploring plans for three additional bases in southern Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory. The effort is said to be part of attempts to ease tensions that emerged after President Donald Trump threatened to take control of the island by force.
Earlier this year, Trump argued that the United States should "own" Greenland in order to prevent Russia and China from increasing their influence in the Arctic region. He said the matter could be resolved the "easy way " or "the hard way."
The White House acknowledged that senior-level discussions with both Greenlandic and Danish officials are underway but declined to reveal further details. According to reports, a White House official said the administration believes the talks are progressing positively.
Denmark has previously indicated openness to discussing an expanded US military presence on the island, while the Danish Foreign Ministry confirmed that negotiations with Washington are continuing.
"There is an ongoing diplomatic track with the United States. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not go into further detail at this time," a spokesperson from Denmark's ministry said.
As stated by reports, American officials have proposed a framework in which the planned bases would operate as sovereign US territory, with a primary mission focused on monitoring Russian and Chinese naval activity in the Arctic region.
