Heathrow Sees Drop in Passenger Numbers as Mideast Conflict Impacts Travel

(MENAFN) Passenger traffic at London Heathrow Airport declined in April, as escalating tensions and conflict in the Middle East disrupted international aviation routes and weakened travel demand, according to airport figures.

The airport reported around 6.7 million passengers during the month, representing a 5% decrease compared with April 2025 and marking the steepest year-on-year decline since March of the previous year.

Airport officials linked the downturn to the impact of the Iran-Israel conflict and wider regional instability, which has contributed to shifts in short-term travel patterns and disrupted global flight networks.

Despite the overall fall, transit travel through Heathrow increased during the same period. The airport recorded a 10% rise in connecting passengers, particularly those traveling between Asia and Oceania, as more travelers opted to route through London rather than traditional Gulf hubs such as Dubai International Airport and Hamad International Airport.

The ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States has led to widespread disruption in global aviation, including flight cancellations, delays, and longer journey times across multiple international routes.

Concerns have also emerged within the aviation industry over potential fuel supply risks, linked to shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. Analysts warn that continued instability could push up ticket prices and create pressure on fuel availability during the peak summer travel season.
