South Korean Cargo Ship Fire in Strait of Hormuz Was Put Out, Crew Safe

(MENAFN) A fire that erupted following an explosion aboard a South Korean-operated bulk carrier in the Strait of Hormuz has been extinguished, with no injuries reported, according to local media reports.

The incident occurred late Monday on the vessel HMM Namu, which was anchored off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, as reported by a news agency.

The blaze reportedly began in the ship’s engine room. Crew members fought the fire for around four hours, using onboard carbon dioxide suppression systems to bring it under control.

All 24 crew members on board—six South Koreans and 18 foreign nationals—were confirmed safe and unharmed.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined and remains under investigation. An official from South Korea’s HMM Co., which operates the vessel, said it is still unclear whether the incident resulted from an external attack or an internal technical failure.

The ship is expected to be towed to Dubai for further inspection and damage assessment as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
