Obama Warns US Leadership Risks Severe Global Fallout Over Iran Policy

(MENAFN) Former US President Barack Obama has warned that the United States could risk causing severe global harm if its leadership abandons fundamental human values, in remarks that indirectly respond to President Donald Trump’s recent threats regarding Iran, according to reports.

In an interview published Monday, Obama emphasized that US leadership should be grounded in respect for human dignity.

He said: "I believe American leadership, as represented by the American president, has to reflect a basic regard for human dignity and decency, not just within our own borders but beyond."

Obama also questioned the broader consequences of the US-Iran conflict, suggesting uncertainty over whether the war had achieved its intended outcomes. He noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had strongly urged both him and Trump toward military confrontation with Iran, but said he had resisted such pressure.

"I think my prognosis was accurate," Obama said, while raising doubts about whether the results of the conflict ultimately benefited either Israel or the United States.

He further commented on Netanyahu’s position, stating that the Israeli leader had achieved his objectives but questioning whether those outcomes were in the best interests of Israel or the United States.

"Whether that's what is ultimately best for the Israeli people, I would question that. Whether I think it's what is good for the United States and America, I would question that. I think there's an ample record of my differences with Mr. Netanyahu," he added.

The remarks come amid continued debate over US foreign policy in the Middle East, particularly regarding Iran and its regional implications.
