Ukraine Announces Early Ceasefire as Russia Plans Separate Victory Day Truce

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Monday that a ceasefire with Russia would begin at 00:00 on the night of May 5–6, emphasizing that preserving human life takes priority over commemorative events.

He stated that Ukraine had not received any formal request from Moscow regarding a pause in hostilities linked to Russia’s Victory Day celebrations. According to his remarks, Ukraine believes it is still possible for a temporary halt in fighting to take effect before the proposed timeline.

Zelenskyy also indicated that Ukraine would act in kind once the ceasefire begins. He further argued that Russia should take meaningful steps toward ending the war, suggesting that even symbolic military events should not take precedence over peace efforts.

Earlier, Russia announced its own separate ceasefire plan covering May 8–9, framed around Victory Day commemorations marking the Soviet victory in World War II. Russian authorities said the pause would be used to ensure security during the events and warned of possible retaliation if Ukraine attempted to disrupt them.

Moscow also accused Kyiv of making threats related to possible strikes during the holiday period, and warned of a strong military response in the event of any such actions.

Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly discussed a possible ceasefire arrangement with US President Donald Trump during a recent phone call, proposing a pause in hostilities tied to the Victory Day period.

The situation reflects continuing uncertainty around temporary truces, with both sides presenting different timelines and conditions for any suspension of fighting, according to reports.
