Wildfires Destroy Over 120 Georgia Homes

(MENAFN) Catastrophic wildfires tearing through the US state of Georgia have scorched nearly 55,140 acres (22,314 hectares) and leveled at least 120 homes as of Monday evening, local media reported Tuesday — marking the most destructive fires in the state's recorded history.

The blazes, raging across Clinch and Brantley counties in southern Georgia, have burned relentlessly for over a week. Media reported that the scale of destruction has surpassed any previous wildfire event on state record.

Scattered thunderstorms briefly offered relief Sunday night, delivering pockets of rainfall that temporarily reduced fire intensity — but fell well short of extinguishing the advancing blazes.

The human toll has been severe. Hundreds of displaced residents have sought refuge in hotels and emergency shelters across Brantley County and at Selden Park in Brunswick. While authorities escorted select families into certain zones Monday to survey the damage, many remain in agonizing uncertainty over whether their properties survived.

On two active fronts, the situation remains critical: The Pineland fire in Clinch County has consumed 32,540 acres (13,168 hectares), with containment at just 23% — leaving approximately two dozen homes still at risk.

The Highway 82 fire in Brantley County has ripped through more than 21,600 acres (8,741 hectares), with a dangerously low containment rate of only 6%, threatening over 350 homes.

A multi-agency response is now fully mobilized. More than 410 personnel — including crews from White County and the Department of Natural Resources — are battling the flames with eight helicopters, 25 engines, and 20 bulldozers deployed to reinforce containment lines as conditions remain volatile.
