Malian Forces Repel Coordinated Attacks, Report Heavy Militant Losses

(MENAFN) Mali’s military announced that more than 200 militants were killed across the country following a series of coordinated assaults, as stated by reports citing remarks from Chief of General Staff Oumar Diarra. Security forces also recovered large amounts of equipment during the operations.

The clashes came after armed groups launched attacks on multiple locations, including Bamako, Kati, Gao, Sevare, and Kidal. According to reports, the offensives were claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin alongside the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front. These coordinated strikes reportedly targeted military bases, key infrastructure, and senior officials, but were ultimately contained by government forces.

“During the operation … the enemy was routed, and this response was consistent with the threats and attacks organized by the terrorists,” Diarra said, adding that “more than 200 terrorists were neutralized.”

Authorities also reported the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, who succumbed to injuries after a suicide car bomb struck his residence during the wave of violence.

Support for Mali’s response came from external actors as well. The Africa Corps indicated that it had assisted Malian troops, stating that the attack “has been thwarted.”

Reactions from regional and global figures followed swiftly. Ibrahim Traore said the Alliance of Sahel States condemned what he described as “ignoble, cowardly, and barbaric acts” against a sovereign nation, stressing that such actions would not weaken the region’s determination to live “free, in peace, and with dignity.”

Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Ministry stated that it “strongly condemns” the incidents reported on April 25 across Mali.

The Chinese Embassy in Mali expressed that it “expresses its deep sorrow” over the death of Sadio Camara and “strongly condemns the terrorist attacks,” while offering “deepest condolences” to the victims.

Similarly, the Russian Embassy in Bamako denounced the events as “cowardly attacks” aimed at destabilizing the country. Russian Foreign Ministry also voiced “deep concern,” warning that the incidents represent a “direct threat” to Mali’s stability.

According to reports, the Russian Foreign Ministry further suggested that early indications point to possible involvement of Western security services in training those responsible for the attacks.
