Poland Pushes for EU Rapid Reaction Forces to Handle Regional Crises
“The EU should be more capable of acting in its immediate neighborhood,” Sikorski said, according to a statement shared by Poland’s Foreign Ministry on the social media platform X following his press conference with Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee.
He pointed to potential instability in regions such as the Balkans or Libya as examples where such forces could be deployed.
According to reports, Sikorski proposed that these rapid response units—already existing in principle—should be properly funded through the EU budget, operate under clear rules of engagement, and allow participation from volunteer member states.
He also stressed that Europe should be able to manage smaller-scale security operations independently, without excessive reliance on external partners.
“The United States is right to say that, in its immediate neighborhood, deterring Putin is a task for NATO as a whole, but in smaller-scale operations, we should be able to ensure our own security without constantly imposing ourselves on others or asking for help,” Sikorski said in another post shared by the ministry.
He added that strengthening European defense capacity would not only improve internal security but also enhance the EU’s standing globally, making it “a more credible ally to the US and a more credible continent to our competitors and friends.”
