Worker Killed in Drone Strike at Contested Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Facility

(MENAFN) An employee at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was killed following a drone strike, according to statements from the plant’s press service cited in reports.

The facility, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been under Russian control since 2022, after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. Since then, it has repeatedly come under attack, with incidents attributed to Ukrainian forces.

According to the plant’s statement, “Today, a driver was killed as a result of a strike by a Ukrainian Armed Forces drone on the transport shop floor of the ZNPP,” adding condolences to the victim’s family. It also stressed that nuclear industry personnel should not be targeted and warned that any attack on the facility “is a threat not only to people but also to security in general.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency also reacted to the incident, with Director General Rafael Grossi reiterating that strikes near nuclear power stations pose serious risks and must be avoided. The agency stated that its on-site team would investigate the situation and continue monitoring developments.

The incident occurred shortly after Grossi visited Kiev for discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During those talks, Zelenskyy reportedly urged the agency to increase pressure on Russia regarding control of the facility.

Ukraine has previously proposed changes to the plant’s status in US-mediated peace discussions with Russia. Former US President Donald Trump has also reportedly suggested ideas involving shared oversight of the site.

However, Moscow has rejected any such arrangements. The Russian Foreign Ministry has stated that joint operation of the plant with any other country is unacceptable and has also ruled out even temporary access for Ukrainian or NATO representatives, citing security risks and concerns over sabotage capabilities.
