UN General Assembly Approves Resolution to Improve Mandate Processes

(MENAFN) The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Tuesday focused on the creation, implementation, and review of mandates, as part of broader efforts to enhance the organization’s efficiency and effectiveness, according to reports.

The resolution passed with 168 votes in favor, 4 against, and no abstentions, with Belarus, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Nicaragua, and Russia opposing it.

Under the resolution, the General Assembly agreed on a set of guiding principles to oversee the full lifecycle of all UN mandates.

"The resolution adopted today reflects a shared understanding of the full mandate lifecycle and a commitment to strengthen each step of it," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, noting that it brings "greater discipline, coherence and transparency to the creation of mandates."

Guterres added that the initiative promotes "clearer, more focused mandates" and supports a culture of continuous improvement based on evidence, accountability, and results. "This is a major step. But it is only the beginning," he said.
