UAE Prepares to Join US-Israeli Efforts Against Iran
Since the conflict began a month ago, the UAE has been targeted by roughly 2,500 Iranian missiles and drones, more than any other country in the region, including Israel. The fighting has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, halving the country’s oil production and causing Dubai and Abu Dhabi stock markets to lose an estimated $120 billion in value.
The Emirates is keen to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for oil trade and is reportedly willing to support the US militarily to achieve this, the reports said. UAE diplomats have privately encouraged Washington to establish a coalition including European and Asian nations to secure control of the strategic waterway.
Officials noted that the UAE is also lobbying for a UN Security Council resolution that would authorize the use of force in the Strait of Hormuz. Abu Dhabi’s leadership is “actively” exploring ways to contribute militarily, including mine-clearing operations and other support roles.
The Gulf state has also requested that the US occupy islands in the strait, such as Abu Musa, which have been under Iranian control for decades but are claimed by the UAE.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Washington could withdraw from the conflict within two to three weeks and “will not have anything to do with” what occurs in the Strait of Hormuz afterward. He added that unblocking the waterway, which handles 20% of seaborne oil trade, would be the responsibility of “whoever uses the strait.”
