IDF Struggles with Severe Troop Shortages Amid Multi-Front Conflict
Military spokesperson Effie Defrin indicated that the armed forces are currently lacking approximately 15,000 troops, including a significant gap in combat personnel estimated between 7,000 and 8,000. “The army is suffering a shortage of about 15,000 soldiers, including 7,000 to 8,000 fighters,” he said on Thursday, emphasizing the urgent need for reinforcements in key areas such as Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank, and Syria.
These concerns come alongside a stark warning from Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir regarding the military’s readiness. According to reports, Zamir informed Israel’s Security Cabinet that the army is raising “10 red flags,” warning that reserve forces “will not hold” under the current level of pressure.
He further cautioned, “The army is heading toward internal collapse in light of the government’s failure to pass laws related to Haredi conscription, regulating reserve service and extending mandatory service,” highlighting legislative challenges that are adding to the strain.
Zamir also pointed out that Israeli forces are simultaneously engaged in operations in Lebanon, Gaza, Syria, Iran, and the West Bank, placing additional pressure on already overstretched units.
He warned that the heavy reliance on reservists is gradually weakening their effectiveness and could ultimately impact the military’s ability to carry out even routine tasks.
