US Navy Ship Departs Red Sea for Repairs After Fire Incident

(MENAFN) The US aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford is scheduled to depart the Red Sea for repairs at the US Navy base on the Greek island of Crete after a fire broke out onboard last week, according to reports.

Currently deployed in the Middle East amid ongoing operations against Iran, the vessel will head to Naval Support Activity Souda Bay for over a week of maintenance, as confirmed by a senior US official to US Naval Institute News.

Earlier reports from Greek media indicated that the carrier is expected to return to Crete next week. The fire, which occurred on March 12 in the aft laundry facility, prompted a major damage control response, displacing sailors and disrupting operations across the ship. Reports note that more than 600 crew members temporarily lost their beds and have been sleeping on floors and tables.

The Gerald R. Ford previously spent four days at Souda Bay in February for resupply before heading toward the eastern Mediterranean.

"On March 12, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) experienced a fire that originated in the ship’s main laundry spaces. The cause of the fire was not combat-related and is contained," US Central Command said on the social media platform X.

Reports note that the US and Israel have continued a joint military campaign against Iran since February 28, resulting in around 1,300 deaths, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets. These attacks have caused casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation, according to reports.
