Russia Keeps Communication Channels Open with Cuba
“We maintain contacts with our Cuban friends at both the expert and working levels,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, responding to questions regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments on Cuba.
Peskov described Cuba as an “independent sovereign state that faces great economic difficulties due to a stifling embargo imposed by the outside world.” Highlighting the severe humanitarian challenges on the island, he added that Russia is prepared to provide “all possible assistance.”
“All these issues are being discussed with our Cuban counterparts,” he said.
Trump, meanwhile, stated Monday that he believes he will have the "honor of taking Cuba," referring to the nation as a "very weakened nation" with a history of violent leadership under Fidel Castro and his brother. “Whether I free it, take it, I think I could do anything I want with it, you want to know the truth,” he said, adding that many people “would like to go back.”
Cuba’s Electric Union (UNE) reported a nationwide power system collapse on Monday. Efforts to restore electricity are ongoing, following a halt in U.S. oil shipments that has further deepened the country’s energy shortage.
