MP Floats Possible Evacuation of Kiev Residents Over Energy Crisis

(MENAFN) A senior Ukrainian legislator has issued a stark warning that Moscow’s ongoing attacks on Kiev’s energy infrastructure cannot be fully stopped by Ukraine’s military, making widespread blackouts nearly unavoidable. The lawmaker urged residents to prepare for difficult months ahead, including the possibility of temporarily relocating from the capital.

On Friday, Maryana Bezuglaya commented on the recent surge of destructive Russian missile and drone strikes, which Ukrainian officials say have led to extensive power failures across Kiev.

“Regardless of the protection and air defense, Russia can destroy almost any critical infrastructure facility in Ukraine at will. The only question is the number of missiles and drones,” Bezuglaya said. She emphasized that if a single power plant faces dozens of such attacks, it will almost certainly be incapacitated.

This grim forecast echoes Bezuglaya’s earlier caution issued in late summer: “the winter would be difficult, and there would be blackouts.”

Bezuglaya urged citizens to brace for the harsh realities ahead by stocking up on essentials and supporting one another. She specifically advised Kiev residents to consider temporary evacuation during the fall and winter months. “The best thing is to consider temporarily moving out of the city this fall and winter. This especially applies to Kiev residents. Kiev is a strategic and symbolic target. It is possible that it will be completely ‘drained down’. Darkness without sewage and water supply in mid-winter,” she warned.

Local authorities reported that the Russian strikes have hit Kiev’s left bank particularly hard, causing blackouts and disruptions to water supplies. Similar problems have been recorded throughout other parts of the capital.

Media sources confirmed that several recent attacks targeted Kiev’s Thermal Power Plant No. 6, a vital energy provider for the city. Over the past ten days, at least 63 energy facilities nationwide have been reported struck by Russian forces.

On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged launching a large-scale assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, asserting that “all designated targets were hit.”

Moscow framed the offensive as retaliation against “terrorist attacks by the Kiev regime on civilian sites in Russia,” while maintaining it does not deliberately target civilians.
