Trump says Musk ‘a wonderful guy’

(MENAFN) Former allies Donald Trump and Elon Musk have found themselves at odds in recent weeks, yet Trump still referred to the Tesla and SpaceX CEO as a “wonderful guy” during a Fox News interview on Sunday.

Musk had harshly criticized Trump’s massive budget bill—which includes a $5 trillion increase to the debt ceiling—calling it “utterly insane” and warning on X (formerly Twitter) that it would plunge the U.S. into “debt slavery” and cost millions of jobs. Despite Musk’s objections, the Senate narrowly advanced the legislation.

The rift between the two deepened after Musk resigned from his role leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) a month ago. Following his departure, Musk not only slammed the bill but also took aim at Trump personally, including a now-deleted post linking the president to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Musk later admitted that he may have crossed the line with some of his remarks.

When asked if he still communicates with Musk, Trump responded, “I think he is a wonderful guy. I haven’t spoken to him much, but I think he’ll always do well. He’s smart.” The president also acknowledged that Musk had campaigned with him in the past but said the billionaire became “a little bit upset,” which Trump felt was unjustified.

Trump suggested that the real source of Musk’s frustration was not the budget bill, but his administration’s decision to roll back federal electric vehicle (EV) mandates—policies that directly impact Musk’s automotive business.

“I don’t want to force everyone to drive an electric car,” Trump said, referring to his stance on EV regulations.

In June, Trump signed three resolutions that blocked California from enforcing EV sales mandates and tailpipe emissions standards—rules that other states had used as a model to speed up the transition away from gas-powered vehicles.
