China Calls on U.S. to Bolster Economic Ties
(MENAFN) China called on the United States to collaborate in fostering "stable" economic relations as President Donald Trump considers sending letters to several countries regarding his "Liberation Day" tariffs.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning conveyed Beijing’s expectation that Washington "will meet China halfway to take concrete actions to uphold and implement the important consensus reached during the phone call between the heads of state of the two countries, jointly promoting the healthy, stable, and sustainable development of China-US economic and trade relations," as reported by media.
"We suggest you consult the relevant Chinese authorities," Mao added during the briefing, reiterating the need for cooperation.
This statement from Beijing follows Trump’s announcement on Thursday that he plans to send out letters to various countries, detailing the specific tariffs they will be required to pay, which could start as soon as Friday. With the tariff deadline of July 9 rapidly approaching, Trump revealed the letters will outline tariffs of "20%, 25%, or 30%."
Earlier discussions between the two countries saw a framework for a tariff agreement take shape after talks in Geneva and London last month.
In a related development, media reported on Friday that the US had lifted its export ban on GE Aerospace jet engine parts and technology to China. In response to the news, Mao expressed hope that Washington would continue working with Beijing to ensure the ongoing stability of their economic and trade ties.
"What I can say is that we hope the US will work with China to maintain the healthy and stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations," she concluded.
