Trump Signals Potential Ceasefire Deal with Hamas Next Week

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that a potential ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could be finalized by next week. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump described a “positive” response from Hamas to a U.S. peace proposal, though he stated that he had not yet received an update on the specifics of the ongoing negotiations. Media reported his comments.

“There could be a deal on a Gaza ceasefire by next week,” Trump said. Hamas, in turn, confirmed it had offered a positive response to Egyptian and Qatari mediators, signaling its readiness to enter immediate discussions about how to implement the ceasefire.

A spokesperson for Hamas clarified that the group is demanding assurances for a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the establishment of a durable truce.

Additionally, Trump suggested that the proposed ceasefire could be extended beyond the initially planned 60 days, should the situation require it.

The announcement comes amidst mounting casualties. At least 20 Palestinians were reported dead on Friday while attempting to access humanitarian aid in Khan Younis, according to Nasser Hospital officials. The United Nations confirmed that 613 Palestinians have perished in the past month while attempting to obtain food.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza’s Muwasi area left 15 dead, including eight women and a child. Local hospitals confirmed the casualties, while Israel’s military has stated that it is reviewing the strikes.

This ongoing conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched a deadly attack on Israel, killing 1,200 people and capturing approximately 250 hostages.

Gaza’s health officials report that over 57,000 Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent Israeli strikes. Despite growing international calls for a ceasefire, Israel’s military operations continue, with accusations of a genocidal campaign against Gaza’s civilian population. More than 57,200 Palestinians, primarily women and children, have died since late 2023.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November 2023 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces an ongoing genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the region.
